The Things They Carried is a collection of short interrelated stories which reads like a novel. The author, a Vietnam veteran himself, uses a combination of memories and fiction, reality and unreality to recreate the experiences of a young foot solider in the Vietnam War and to depict the altered reality of life in the midst of war.
